The quick answer is the Personal Representative is the person responsible for carrying out the directives of a Will. The Personal Representative also manages the deceased’s unfinished and ongoing affairs, such as closing bank accounts and paying debts while protecting and maintaining all of the deceased’s assets and belongings. The Personal Representative’s to-do list can be long depending on the assets of the deceased individual, so it’s impossible to list a complete task list in the hypothetical.
Being a Personal Representative is a great responsibility and potential burden, especially if the estate is large or has many beneficiaries so I caution my clients to not enter into this role lightly.
